The May 7-14, 2018; Cuba program includes numerous opportunities to interact with Cuban citizens and learn about community development, religious tolerance, cultural and historic preservation, education, the arts, and private non-governmental organization efforts to improve the quality of everyday life for Cubans. 



After clearing Customs the delegation will transit to hotel.

This evening the delegation will be treated to a performance by the Cienfuegos Choir. After the performance you will meet with classically trained musicians to discuss education and training in the performing arts in Cuba.
Welcome dinner will be held at a private restaurant, Finca del Mar.


Today we travel to the historic city of Trinidad. The city of Trinidad was founded in 1514 by Diego Velazquez de Cuellar under the name Villa De la Santísima Trinidad. It is one of the best preserved colonial cities in the Caribbean from the time when the sugar trade was the main industry in the region. Note: Lunch at a local restaurant will be provided during visit.

The Plaza Mayor in Trinidad, Cuba, is the historic center of the town, declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988. The buildings surrounding the central square date from the 18th and 19th centuries when trade in sugar from the nearby Valle de los Ingenios and slaves brought great riches to the area. Many of the buildings surrounding the central square belonged to the wealthy landowners of the city. When the trade in sugar diminished and the slave trade ended in the mid-19th century,
Trinidad became a backwater and because little building was done until the 1950s many of the historic buildings and streets were preserved, especially the grand constructions in the immediate vicinity of the Plaza Mayor.

Today, most of the houses surrounding the square are home to museums. The delegation will visit the Trinidad Museum of Architecture to discuss historic preservation and learn why Trinidad received its UNESCO World Heritage designation. Other visits in Trinidad may include a stop at a local home which cares for the disabled to make a donation, a visit to a pottery factory to meet with artisans, and a visit to the Casa Temp Lode Santera Yemaya to discuss with the practitioners their services and beliefs.

After departing Trinidad we will travel to the Valle de los Ingenios (a UNESCO World Heritage site), or Valley of the Sugar Mills.This is a series of three interconnected valleys about 7 miles outside of Trinidad. This was the center for sugar production from the late 18th century until the late 19th century. We will have a discussion with local experts and citizens on the history of the Valley and life today for its residents.

Upon our return to Cienfuegos late afternoon we will attend a performance by the children of La Colmenita. La Colmenita was developed with the purpose of conveying a message of peace, humanity and forgiveness.  As official UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors, the children of La Colmenita are required to demonstrate these values not only in their performances but in their daily lives.  After the performance we will interact with the children and teachers.

The delegation will interact with local citizens while visiting the Paseo del Prado, a pedestrian-only boulevard lined with various stores. You will have the opportunity to meet self-employed workers (cuenta propistas) who operate the businesses along the boulevard. During the tour you will visit the Imaginondo Unidos Proyecto. This project is a center that produces graphic arts and supports young adults with Downs Syndrome.

The delegates will have an overview of the techniques practiced at the workshop, and a detailed discussion on the different mediums that each artist uses in their work. The discussion will be followed by a Q&A where the young Cuban artists and delegates will share ideas and common interests with one another. Time allowing, delegation will visit a farmers market, an example of semi-free enterprise in Cuba or an artists’ cooperative that showcases Afro-Cuban art.

Day 4, May 10 | HAVANA

Visit the Colon Cemetery with local experts. The Cemeterio de Colon is one of the most historical and important architectural venues in Cuba. Delegates will learn the history of the 140 acre grounds which is the resting place to some of the most famous Cuban intellectuals such as Cuban writers Nicolas Guillen and Alejo Carpentier. Delegates will get a chance to engage with and ask questions of the Cuban experts on site.

Day 5, May 11 | HAVANA

This morning delegates will visit a day care center run by the Catholic Order Sisters of the Love of God. The delegates will have the opportunity to meet with the Center’s founder, Sister Teresa Vaz, to discuss her ongoing programs and to provide vitamins and other items of need for the children. PTPI will provide delegation in advance with a list of items they can bring to donate to Sister Teresa for the children. Delegates will have the opportunity to meet with the Sisters and lay people on staff and to interact with the children who are cared for by the Center.

In the afternoon we will visit artist Kelvin López. Described as a painter and sculptor, Kelvin is one of Cuba's leading artists. Discuss his unique insight into the culture, history, and people of Cuba as he shares his art.

Today our delegation will visit the Las Terrazas sustainable community. After a midmorning arrival delegates will visit the community school to talk with the children, visit a local artist's home and workshop and meet with community members to learn about their daily lives. A special lunch will be held at a local family restaurant in the community.

This afternoon, delegates will have the opportunity to interact with the community residents and learn about their respective roles within the community.

This evening, upon returning to Havana, delegates will enjoy dinner on their own.


Day 7, May 13 | HAVANA

Visit the National Ballet School. The Cuban ballet is one of the most renowned ballets in the world. Their style is unique and of the highest quality. The school focuses to promote the techniques of classical ballet and dance form in Cuba. This important school's goal is to foster young students through the methodology and comprehensive steps of mastering the art of dance. Our delegates will interact with students and instructors to gain appreciation for the divergent modalities of dance. 

Lunch and meeting with Cuban farmers at a privately owned and operated farm. The farmers will teach us about their organic farming techniques, and will share stories about their daily lives.

Interactive visit to Hemingway's home, Finca Vigia. Delegates will meet with the Director, Ms. Ada Rosa Rosales, and local experts who will discuss with the delegates the importance to Cuba of this great novelist. Delegates will have an overview of the current restoration projects for the Finca Vigia and its collection. Cubans and American guests will discuss the novelist's life, work and relationship with Cuba and its relationship to contemporary Cuban writers. 

Return to the hotel followed by dinner at private restaurant.

Day 8, May 14 | HAVANA-MIAMI

This morning delegates will check out of the hotel and transfer to the International Airport Jose Marti for your flight to Miami (11:45AM flight).

Anna Bazan-Munguia 
was born and raised in Tyler, Texas and relocated to the Kansas City area six years ago. She has been with PTPI for two years and oversees all adult travel programs as our Director of Travel and Business Development. Anna stays quite involved in the Kansas City community by serving as a Big Sister with Big Brothers Big Sisters, sitting on their Diversity Task Force and was a BBBS Most Wanted Auction alumni. She is also a member of Young Latino Professionals where she once sat as their Vice President of Membership. For the past three years she was the Co-Chair of her Texas A&M University- Kansas City chapter club. Anna also volunteers with DIFFA, is a mentor with The University of Missouri Kansas City’s Avanzando program, and is an alumnus for Woman of the Year with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Anna is a newlywed as of September 2017. This will be Anna's second time visiting the beauitful island of Cuba!

  • Purchase your outbound airfare on American Airlines Flight 2751 departing Monday, May 7th from Miami International Airport at 3:45pm and arriving to Abel Santamaria Airport in Santa Clara, Cuba at 4:55pm.
  • Purchase your return flight on American Airlines Flight 1334 departing Monday, May 14th from Jose Marti International Airport in Havana, Cuba at 11:45am to Miami, Florida.  
Please note you are responsible for booking your domestic and international airfare connecting through Miami International Airport. We kindly ask that you give yourself three hours before your connecting flight to allow ample time through customs.

People to People International reserves the right to decline to accept or retain any person as a program participant. Should any person’s health, physical infirmity, or general deportment, in the judgment of the delegation leader, impede the operation of the program or the rights, welfare, or enjoyment of other participants, the leader has the right to terminate that person(s) participation, and a refund of unused services, where such refund can be obtained from land operators, is the limit of the sponsor’s responsibility should such person be required to depart the program. In arranging for transportation or conveyance, hotel accommodations, or other services and in carrying out the program, neither the sponsors nor their agents shall be responsible or liable for any loss, cost, damage, injury, delay, irregularity, or expense of any kind whatsoever arising from the use of any conveyance, accommodations, or services, or from thefts, pilferage, government restrictions, or regulations and any loss or expense resulting from the above contingencies shall be borne by the participant. Neither the sponsors nor the agents shall be responsible or liable for any loss, injury, damage, or expense suffered or incurred by the participant in respect of any acts, or omissions of any third parties, the participant hereby expressly waiving any such responsibility or liability, and services are subject to the laws of the countries visited. People to People International shall not be responsible in any way for loss or damage to baggage or personal effects. INSURANCE FOR LUGGAGE, PERSONAL EFFECTS, ACCIDENTS, AND TRIP CANCELLATION IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. If the program must be canceled prior to travel, the liability of People to People International or its agents is limited to refund of monies received by People to People International or its agents for delegates currently registered. The sponsors reserve the right, in their sole discretion, to withdraw the program (in which case a refund will be made) or to make such alterations in the schedule as they may deem necessary or desirable. No refund shall be made for services not taken in case of sickness, accident, or emergency resulting in omission of service for less than three consecutive days. Refund will be made on the basis of such amount, if any, as is actually recovered on unused accommodation and service, less all expenses and charges incidental to effecting cancellations. Refund for unused transportation tickets will be made in accordance with the respective carrier regulations. If the program must be canceled after travel has begun, the liability of People to People International or its agents is limited to a refund of unused services, where such refund can be obtained from land operators. All parties must be 18 years of age or older, unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. Enrollment in a program allows People to People International the right to use any photos or videos taken during the program.
