Homestays with PTPI's Interlaken, Switzerland Chapter July 17, 2009

PTPI’s Interlaken/Bernese Oberland, Switzerland Chapter recently hosted American high school students traveling on a People to People Student Ambassador program. The 42 students and four teachers, who traveled from Texas, enjoyed a 3-day stay in Interlaken, a resort town nestled in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland, as part of their three-week European tour. After a warm welcome from chapter president Thomas Ammann and city councilman Philippe Ritschard at Interlaken's city hall, the visitors were greeted and whisked off by the many families from the region who each hosted two to three students or teachers in their homes. Families came up with different and creative ways to show their guests a slice of life in Switzerland. Some explored castles while others took boat rides on a pristine lake, visited Swiss schools (just in time for year-end parties), cheered at a village soccer tournament, hiked in the mountains, picked produce from a garden or ate Swiss specialties, like fondue and – of course –chocolate. As in previous years, a team from the Interlaken chapter organized a special program for the students' last day. This year, at a lovely restaurant on the shores of the lake of Thun, the students took part in an information and discussion forum on the topic of education. They were asked to compare the different school systems of the U.S. and Switzerland with the help of local educators and students. The invited speakers gave colorful, anecdotal accounts of the multi-tiered Swiss education model to an attentive audience, who quickly learned about the path of a Swiss student from kindergarten through the higher education levels. The students were then broken up into smaller groups, where they could explore the pros and cons of both systems in greater detail with a Swiss student or teacher. While a delicious pasta lunch was being prepared, students sat outside under a sunny sky and chatted, then summarized their impressions and comments on a question sheet. Their conclusions were then presented after lunch. Families, students, teachers and organizers alike all came away with new impressions and perspectives about each others' school experiences. The American students, for example, were impressed with the lack of competition for university places in the Swiss system, which is more geared to early professional tracking and upper-level secondary schools that offer a wide range of career and vocational training. They also found year-round schooling and low costs to be a Swiss advantage. Some, however, preferred the large spectrum of sports and extracurricular activities of a U.S. school, which do not exist in Switzerland. All were in agreement in their dislike of standardized tests and the lack of financial investment in academic programs in the U.S. Switzerland's early foreign language instruction also impressed the American students. Lighter hearted conversation accompanied lunch and dessert, followed by good-bye hugs and wishes for happy travels to the next destination, the Alsace region of France. Thomas Ammann bid farewell to the homestay guests as the families stayed behind to wave the tour bus goodbye, with the hope that some would find their way back again to the beautiful Alpine region and their Swiss “families”. KC Star feature article on Mary Eisenhower February 21, 2009

Hearing a call. Answering it. Someone grabbed Mary Eisenhower by the arm. There’s a person here you must meet, she was told. Eisenhower glanced across the room. She knew immediately who the person was. He looked like his father. Her heart sank. Was it appropriate that she, an Eisenhower, and Sergei Khrushchev were invited to the same conference? What would she say to the son of the shoe-banging, bury-the-West Nikita Khrushchev?
