SCHOOL AND CLASSROOM PROGRAM PROJECTS

Connecting with Children in Azerbaijan

People to People International has joined the U.S. Department of State and several other nongovernmental organizations to eradicate landmines around the world. In support of this important partnership, the PTPI School and Classroom Program has developed the project Connecting with Children in Azerbaijan. This project pairs middle and secondary classrooms in the United States with their counterparts in refugee camps in Azerbaijan. The intent is to educate American students about landmines and the significant, life-altering effects these hidden killers have on the people who live with them. With assistance from the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) and Relief Azerbaijan, the project introduces American students to Azeri peers who have been displaced from their homes for many years, and through interaction via letter exchange, and in some instances teacher email accounts, enables students to share thoughts about their lives, the world, conflict, and peace initiatives. Furthermore the project cultivates cultural understanding and positive relationships between American and Muslim people.

Middle and secondary classrooms or groups may join this project. Please note partner classrooms in Azerbaijan are limited. Participating classrooms are given a project guide with information about Azerbaijan, the landmine crisis and refugees. Schools can also send basic schools supplies to their Azeri partner classroom via PTPI's contacts. To communicate with a classroom in Azerbaijan in support of landmine awareness and global friendship, please register with the School and Classroom Program by contacting classroom@ptpi.org.
